Black Dossier – 3rd installment in A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

This is a library issue, not a book review.

Two librarians in KY have been fired because they kept the book with its graphic drawings (pun intended) purposely out of circulation. I did see some of the images and they are unabashedly sexual in nature.  The article I linked was how Greensboro Libraries chose not to include the book because it was categorized “Adult” in the material they use for selection.

One of the librarians in KY, kept the book perpetually checked out so that no one else could check it out. When it was put on hold, she went and viewed the patron’s records to find that the patron was 11, so she overrode the hold and checked it out again.

How do you feel about librarians playing parent in this way?

btw, the librarians were fired because their system has adopted parts of the Library Bill of Rights as their policy which says that access is equal and not dependent on any factors (like age).

  1. Not sure I would have suggested firing them this time, but maybe something else. However, it is rather unlibrarian like, ain’t it?
